Tony, who Danny calls the "little boy that lives in my mouth," is Danny's imaginary best friend and often the messenger of imminent danger, speaking through Danny to warn him and his mother that something bad is about to happen. Much of the film is explored through Danny's point of view, and many identify him as its protagonist. Danny is shy and secretive about his psychic abilities, telling only the hotel's chef, Dick Hallorann, about his powers. Danny has an imaginary friend named Tony, who often speaks through Danny to warn him and his mother of danger. He is gifted (or cursed) with powerful telepathic and psychic abilities that enable him to communicate with the evil spirits present in the Overlook Hotel and to see visions of the future before it happens. Danny Torranceĭanny is the son of Jack and Wendy Torrance. She is forced to summon her strength to fight against him as her once semi-harmonious family life morphs into one of the bona fide horror movies she used to love. Although Wendy initially attempts to remain sympathetic to Jack's increasingly volatile fits of rage in response to her intrusion on his writing, she eventually comes to see him as a threat to her and Danny. She is a good mother and often present for her son's strange bouts with telepathy, as opposed to her often absent husband, Jack. Wendy is the fragile, timid wife of Jack and mother to Danny. As the film plays out, however, Jack takes on a role as the story's clear antagonist, possessed as he is by the evil spirits of the Overlook Hotel, which compel him to become increasingly possessive of his writing and dangerous to his wife and son. Jack begins the film as a relatively sympathetic character and might even be mistaken for its protagonist at the beginning of the film, as he is ambitious and intelligent, even though he has a history of abusing his son. Having lost his job as a prep school teacher, Jack believes his new job will provide the fresh start that he and his family need, as well as the time and space to write, his new profession. At one point killing Danny was even discussed, with Kubrick imagining a small chalk outline of the boy's body on the hotel floor, but cooler heads prevailed.Jack is a writer who takes on a job as the isolated Overlook Hotel's acting manager during its winter closure. The idea of killing off Dick was also done to raise the dramatic levels of the story and heighten the horror. "He thought there might be something else that would be metaphorically and visually more interesting."īy leaving the Overlook "alive" at the end of the film, Kubrick was able to ensure its menace would not be diminished in the audiences mind.
"The ending was changed almost entirely because Kubrick found it a cliche to just blow everything up," the film's co-screenwriter Diane Johnson told Entertainment Weekly. King's ending also has the boilers exploding from neglect and the Overlook burning down as Wendy, Danny and a very much alive Dick Hallorann escape. This ending has many differences from the novel, chiefly the climax which involves hedge animals coming to life instead of a hedge maze, something that with 1980 technology would have looked rather ridiculous. As horror filmmakers have practiced time and time again, there's nothing like old music by dead people to set a mood. It hones in right at the photo in the center, which depicts a massive July 4 ball at the Overlook in 1921, with Jack Torrance front-and-center, smiling almost maniacally right into the camera as "Midnight, the Stars & You" by Henry Hall & The Gleneagles Hotel Band plays hauntingly into the credits. The final shot has the camera gliding through The Gold Room out into the hallway where rows of photographs from the hotel's past are hung. A jump cut shows him the next morning completely frozen, literally stone cold dead.
As Wendy and Danny escape in the snowcat that Hallorann brought with him, Jack slumps down amid the freezing maze, exhausted and muttering. Jack is misled through the maze, and winds up lost in the freezing cold. He then pursues Danny into the hotel's outdoor hedge maze, and after hotly pursuing his boy's tracks, Danny fools his father by tracing backwards over his own tracks and then escaping. Then Overlook chef Dick Hallorann (Scatman Crothers) arrives after sensing via "Shining" (King's term for ESP), and Jack heads off to murder him with the axe.
